How many of you can say that at some time had to have someone remind you that it is Mothers Day? It is a forgivable offense to forget a birthday or maybe an anniversary, but not so forgivable to forget Mothers Day.
Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday is a tradition that dates back as far as ancient Greece. The evolution of the festival has been linked to the Christian calendar, whereby the fourth Sunday of Lent was given over to honour one’s mother and to celebrate the Virgin Mary (mother of Jesus). On this day, as the tradition goes, small gifts are given and the ‘usual’ chores a ‘mother’ does are carried out by another member of the household (usually the father or the children).
The tradition of celebrating Mothers Day, as a special day for all hard working mums everywhere, is upheld in many countries around the world. In the UK the tradition goes all the way back to the 16th century, which means that an awful lot of mothers have been honoured down the ages. In the early years of Mothers Day celebrations, servants and apprentices were released from the work duties and allowed to go home to visit their mothers for the weekend and the idea of treating our mothers to wonderful gifts and surprises was born.
Today Mother’s day involves everything from giving gifts, writing poems, cutting cakes to showering mothers with boundless love. The festival of Mothers Day is based on the emotions shared between mother and a child. As grownups it’s our turn to thank that special lady with the best that we can.

Of all holidays and special occasions, Mother’s Day is one that is full of memories, longing and thanks for everyone. This one day of the year is when we take a moment to pay tribute to that one person to whom we each owe so much. The love of a mother is unconditional and eternal, and on Mother’s Day children, young and old, take the time to honor her in return. We do this by writing letters, sending cards and flowers, and buying or making presents for our mothers. One of the most touching tributes is reading or writing Mother’s Day poems.
